The "Turd in a Punchbowl" Meme

Where do you people come up with this stuff?!?!?

I've been tagged by AmericanGirl for the "Turd in a Punchbowl" meme.

The rules: one must write a four line poem  with the phrase "turd in a punchbowl" as the first and third lines, and the second and fourth line must rhyme.  Then you must tag three people to do the meme.

Turd in a punchbowl
Who put you there?
Turd in a punchbowl
It wasn't me, I swear!

Turd in a punchbowl
Have you no shame?
Turd in a punchbowl
Who will take the blame?

It took me a while to come up with three people who would handle the "turd in a punchbowl" meme with the grace and sophistication of previous poets.  So I've chosen JustMe63, ButterflyLane, and dthomas9.

As soon as I closed the door on my way out, I realized that I left my keys in the room.  The door locks automatically, so basically I locked myself out.  I didn't feel like going through the whole rigamarole of getting my back-ups from housing at the time, so I just went on my merry way.  Now I have something to look forward to when I get out of class tonight.

My final project is coming along swimingly.

Wednesday Poetry

First Fight. Then Fiddle. (1949)

First fight. Then fiddle. Ply the slipping string
With feathery sorcery; muzzle the note
With hurting love; the music that they wrote
Bewitch, bewilder. Qualify to sing
Threadwise. Devise no salt, no hempen thing
For the dear instrument to bear. Devote
The bows to silks and honey. Be remote
A while from malice and from murdering.
But first to arms, to armor. Carry hate
In front of you and harmony behind.
Be deaf to music and to beauty blind.
Win war. Rise bloody, maybe not too late
For having first to civilize a space
Wherein to play your violin with grace.

Soothing Post of the Week

 Egypt is Beautiful

Reasons I need something soothing:
1. I have a presentation today.   I hate presentations. And it's about a topic I'm not that interested in, in a class I don't really like.
2. My thesis is due in less than two weeks.  Two weeks. Twoweekstwoweekstwoweeks. I'm not hyperventilating.
3. My final project for this English class is due in a little over two weeks.  And I have one page. One page that doesn't work.
4. I almost lost my jumpdrive, which contained images and work for #1 and #3. I almost cried. Thank god there are honest, good people in this world.
5. I'm graduating in a little less than a month and right now, my plans are made of this:
       a. beach trip to Outer Banks NC for one week.
       b. three weeks in Ecuador
       c. if I don't have a job by the time I get back, me and a friend are going to become bartenders at Ocean City. Yeah, it's that bad.
6.  I've applied to exactly three positions.  So #5 is looking pretty bleak right now.

So onto the soothing image of the week.  Isn't this just a lovely scene? It reminds me, actually of one of those safari boat rides you go on at Busch Gardens.  But this is real life in Egypt. I scoured my image gallery for pics that I wasn't in and weren't bleak.  Since a majority of them were of England, it wasn't looking good, considering that I basically became a vampire there.  But eventually I came across this gem.

Quick Blogging Thought

this is for you bloggers out there: have you ever noticed the reception of certain posts over others?  Like, some posts you are sure people will really respond to but no one cares.  And other posts that are just passing thoughts or silly random stuff, you get lots of responses to?  Okay, it's obviously not a fool proof calculation, but maybe it has something to do with when you plan out your posts and when you simply just sit down and write.   And on that note, who here plans out everything you write? Do you ever submit something without thinking about how it's being perceived?

Wanna see some ENGL 344 assignments?

My four assignments can be found at my school homepage.

Assignment #1: Hypertext assignment.  I used the theme of the museum because that is the theme of my final project

Assignment#2: Cultural Jamming.  I edited an advertisment as a way of cultural and social critique.

Assignment#3: Collage.  I used the theme of "connoisseur," because it goes along with the theme of museum.

Assignment#4: Pop Cycle: I just made a really silly connection between objects in pop culture.

Poll Shows Majority of US Catholics Approve of New Pope

well DUH!  It's because we're supposed to.  Despite the fact that there is a voting process, Catholics believe that the selection of the Pope occurs through the divine will of God.  If we didn't like it, that's like saying we're going against God's will!  That's why it is possible for more than 73% of US Catholics to consider themselves "enthusiastic" about the new Pope while, simultaneously, 52% believe the Church is out of touch with modern Catholics.  It also fails to remember that I know people who are excited about the new Pope and aren't even Catholic.  It's just because it's a new item, and most importantly a positive item,  in World News.

Look, I capitalized "World News" like it's a corporation.

Am I the only person who is mildly concerned at public bigotry against Islam?  I suppose it makes sense...I know I'm also mildly upset that I can't be racist against n***ers and Jews, especially since they haven't done anything wrong in a while (well, besides take our jobs and run our economy).  But those towel heads! Man! Thank god they attacked us, or else I would have no where to direct my displaced hatred.

Why does the customer always lose?

okay, so I went down to the store to buy some things this morning that I needed.  And while I'm there, I decide to buy some lipstick.  I pay for everything at once and leave, off on my merry way.

When I come home, I realize that the lipstick isn't in the bag.  It's on the receipt, but I definitely didn't pull it out of the bag.  I scrambled for the bag that I had tossed and it was empty.  I remembered very clearly scrunching the bag up to make sure there was nothing left.  The lipstick was definitely gone and I was 93% sure the lady never put it in the bag.

What does one do in this situation? I really didn't have time to go back: the store wasn't exactly close and I had work to do.  It was already fairly late in the afternoon.  And besides, what would the store do in this case?  I mean, there's a chance that somewhere between the store and my dorm that the lipstick jumped out of the bag...I went back and checked my car.  My dorm is a single...which means no living room or kitchen to lose the lipstick.  I searched and searched...definitely nothing.

So I decided to call.  Of course, no one did anything, I doubt they even believed me.  I finally demanded to speak to customer service, who said they would check with lost and found.  I expressed my doubt that the sales person would send it to lost and found and probably put it back on the shelf.  They insisted and came back to say they checked the cash register and lost and found and nothing.  I could have argued longer, but I knew it would amount to nothing.  And I didn't want to turn into one of those irrate customers.

I'm SOO upset, but mostly at myself.  And that's what makes me really upset, I feel like there was no way I could win in a situation like this.  It's my fault for not checking the bag.  And I don't want to get someone reprimanded for what was probably a human mistake.  But when the mistake has been made, why doesn't anyone make an effort to help out the customer?  It feels like either way, the customer loses. Oh well, that's what I get for trying to treat myself to some $12 lipstick.

This week is just shaping up to be a stressful pain in the butt.

Final Project Update

I'm really frustrated right now about this whole project thing.

First of all, did you know the Star Lab isn't open on Saturdays!?!?! I had plans to go out today, Sunday, so I was going to work on my project all day Saturday.  I walked my butt all the way down there and NOTHING.  I was pissed.

So today I plan for a really long day at the Lab and skipping the thing I was going to do.  And I sit down, I have a bunch of images saved that I made on Ohotoshop that I plan on using.  And I realize that after twenty billion STAR labs, the only thing i know how to do is make shapes change and how to insert a table on a home page.  I mean, I learned a lot, but I didn't learn how to do everything together; they don't teach you how to synthesize all the different skills into making a stellar webpage.  So I asked for the book....and it still didn't work.  So after three hours I have a fairly lame Flash film and a crappy home page.  I'm pretty upset and discouraged at this point.
