I am utterly miserable in my office.  The dry heat is killing me.  Everything is dry and irritated: my contacts and eyes, my skin, my throat and sinuses.  How am I supposed to work under these conditions?  I can't even blog, I'm so uncomfortable.  I'll see you guys next year.

Holiday Highlights

  • Meals at Blue Duck Tavern, Vidalia, and best of all, Mom's Place.
  • Icebox Cake
  • Gifts that prove people are listening to my super subtle hints.
  • Future blog post about how my year (and, obstensibly, my life) revolves around eating
  • False eyelashes from my mom.  Where does she come up with this stuff?
  • Gifts that are surprisingly awesome: bagless vacuum.
  • Best gift overall: Mom got Dad an electric guitar and amp.  It was the most excited anyone in the house has been on Christmas since I got the three level Barbie townouse with the elevator that Barbie always fell out of.
  • Awesome new dress for New Year's.
  • Deciding not to do anything on New Year's.
  • (Still) Crying over returned New Year's dress (well, to be fair, it didn't fit me anyway.)
  • Back to work on Wednesday and zero network connection for most of the day.  Thumb twiddling commences.
  • Prairie dogs at the zoo.
  • Looking forward to: wine and icebox cake leftovers.

Well I KNEW this would happen.  My boss got me a great Christmas gift and I show up with nothing.  I'm in crisis mode right now.  SOMEBODY PLEASE GIVE ME SOME IDEA OF WHAT TO DO HERE!?!?!?

You know, finishing up the semester really strong and only have two (okay, three) breakdowns should be its own reward.  But then you find all these wonderful things on the internet and it's like God himself decided to bless me for all my hard work.

Bea Arthur and Rock Hudson singing about how people got high in the old days.  Ahh the old days.

Last night after our final exam, a few classmates and I went out for drinks at a bar called "Santa Fe" in College Park.  I don't mean to make judgments, but my clothes are still sterilizing in the antiseptic bath.  At least my beer was on special.  And I mean ON SPECIAL.  You don't know drink specials until you see how much I paid for this beer.  I've paid more for a roll of toilet paper.  Generic

Last week was quite possibly the worst week of my entire life.  I was sick.  The hamster was in the hospital.  I was having a mental breakdown about school.  Work was driving me batshit insane.  And it. just. didn't. end.

I'm better now, the hamster seems chipper as ever and over the weekend I had a zen-like moment where I said "I don't care anymore." My GOD what a freeing thought.  I plan on turning in my paper two days early with my test tomorrow and wiping my hands of all of it.  And they hired someone here at work, which will hopefully improve my quality of work life a dozen-fold.  And I think I'm covered for Christmas gifts which means the only thing really left to think about is which cookie recipe I'm going to attempt to make this week.

Life's too short.  Eat more cookies.

Things I Did This Weekend To Avoid Doing Homework

  1. Planned my vacation to Morocco.  No, really.
  2. Stuffed myself silly with mezze at Lebanese Taverna and white chocolate banana bread pudding at Busboys and Poets.
  3. Shopped for Christmas gifts for four hours without dying
  4. Attended a Christmas party at the two level flat of an attorney in Logan Circle, that featured a amazingly well-stocked bar and accompanying hottie bartender, catered food and waiters, and these peanut butter cup tarts that I stuffed into my purse on the way out the door.
  5. Decided to apply to law school.
  6. Got a head cold (to further keep myself from doing homework, clearly my body is on Team Arlene.  YES.)
  7. Checked out Park at 14th, which was underwhelming.
  8. Bought a Christmas tree at Trader Joe's, which I will actually water and decorate this year.
  9. Cleaned the apartment and picked up groceries for the week.
  10. Watched the History of Sex on the History channel, which was fascinating.

Okay.  Time to do work.  OR look for shoes online.  Quandary...

It's the December to Remember Sales Event

wearing: I just bought a new pair of jeans and some rain boots online.  I refuse to shop the conventional way anymore.  But anyway, when they arrive, that is what I'll be wearing.
listening to: Classical music station at work
reading: You'll be thrilled to know I'm now on a new chapter of The Omnivore's Dilemma.
watching: Who has time for that thing? Although I've been staying up late lately and if I'm up past 1am I always try to catch Golden Girls on Lifetime. TV on DVD for Christmas everyone!
craving: Really good sushi and wine. And a fireplace.
wondering: How am I going to make it through the next two weeks? What in the heck do I buy everyone for Christmas? Why am I such a weeny when it comes to cold weather?
wishing: Life were easy.  I had time to go to the gym again.  I lived in the apartment building next to my office so I could roll out of bed at 8:30am.
lusting after: Freedom from school. Oh it will be such a sweet release.
loving: Honestly, my job and my coworkers, who are such smart wonderful people. Except for that one surly admin up on the fifth floor.
hating: The surly admin on the fifth floor. Snow, which is the scourge of the earth. Snow is acceptable in one or two events, namely when I'm Ina Garten living in my giant Hamptons abode where I spend the day baking, or when I'm skiing, which I don't do anyway.
crushing: I heard Christian Bale is going to be in the next Terminator movie and my whole world view has shifted.
impatiently awaiting: Our January vacation. Woohoo! Finally convinced The Boy (err, tied down and stole his credit card) to take me somewhere exotic.
dreading: Um, the next two weeks? My final project, which I am in complete denial about. Winter weather, which I am also in complete denial about.

Did I forget to mention that we were going to go to Seattle?  Well, we went to Seattle.  Just got home and now I'm decompressing.

The weather was wonderful, truly.  Just sunshine and a few clouds, you could see the mountain range from the city and the air was crisp and fresh, exactly like what you would expect in the Northwest.

And then we landed.

We practically ran to the Space Needle since the forecast called for snow (!) all weekend.  And sure enough, we arrived just in time to see the the mist literally moving its way into the city, covering our $16 view with a bigger snow storm than DC even sees in December.

My mom texted me the next day to see if the weather improved, and of course it had.  NOW it was only raining really hard.  All day.  Nonstop.  And it rained right up until the plane took off, heading back home.

Seattle is great, it has a lot of things that I really want in a city. Of course I fell in love with the Pike Place market even if the only people who use it are tourists.  Things we ate in the market: roasted almonds spiced with garlic, delicate smoked salmon, crispy fresh donuts with steamy soft interiors, some sort of orange that a girl was handing out, jazz apples with bite, egg, spinach and cheese piroshky, fresh from the oven, smoked beef jerky, and of course, we were tools and went to the first Starbucks ever.

We'll probably go back to see more of the scenic parts and do more outdoorsy things, but I loved our trip and it was a wonderful quick weekend away.  Now it's back to face the music and actual work.  If you don't hear from me after December 20, contact the University of Maryland.  I may have died in the back stacks of the library.
